Buying Art As a Gift

Buying artwork as a gift may be intimidating, but it can also be a perfect, unique gift and a lovely, thoughtful gesture. Art can be a wonderful gift for any occasion including a baby shower, a wedding gift, a housewarming gift, a "thank you" gift, and much more. Whether you are wanting to help someone begin an art collection or add to an already extensive collection, following these guidelines may help.

1. Start small. It is easy for someone to find a perfect place for a small sized piece of art. Larger scale artwork can be a bit too imposing. You are just adding to their home, not trying to dominate it.

2. Think about what the recipient has in their home in terms of style. Do they have vintage or contemporary furniture? Do they have muted or bright colors? Try to find artwork that compliments (not necessarily mirrors) their other décor.

3. Do not get caught up with a theme or subject. A wedding gift does not need to have a "love" theme and your horse-loving friend does not need a painting of a horse. This can be limiting and not very creative. Think outside of the box, and also consider abstract artwork.

4. Be bold! While many homes do not flaunt bright colors or loud furniture, artwork can be bright and loud! Art is the small, contained place to make a statement in a home.

5. Make it unique. Do not buy the same classic prints of classic artwork everyone has seen a thousand times. Look for a local artist and buy an original work of art or a fine art print.

6. Include the story – the story of why you bought it or the artist's story of how or why they created it. Art is always better when you know the story behind it.

7. It is a good idea to frame the artwork, but you do not necessarily have to. Allowing the new owner to frame it themselves may let them choose the frame that best matches their taste and décor. This will allow you both to contribute to a wonderful piece of art in their home!

8. Ask the artist! If you need help deciding on the perfect piece for your recipient, who knows the artwork selection better than the person who created it? Most artists are happy to help someone select the perfect piece.

9. If you cannot find the perfect artwork gift but still want to give art as a gift, consider a gift certificate. Many artists are happy to give a gift certificate, and choosing art will be a fun and exciting endeavor for the recipient.
